Oral Exam Scope and Directions
“Tops and Bottoms” & Upcoming Unit Test
Dear Students and Families,
This week in Reading Street, we
focused on the story “Tops and Bottoms” from Unit 3.1. Students explored
story elements, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension, all of which
will be tested in the Unit Test this Friday.
Focus
Areas This Week:
1. Reading Street Story: “Tops
and Bottoms”
We discussed the plot, characters (Hare and Bear), the lesson, and story
structure. Students answered comprehension questions such as:
- What is the problem between Bear and Hare?
- How does Hare solve his family's problem?
- What is the trick that Hare uses?
- What lesson does Bear learn by the end of the story?
2. Author’s Purpose – PIE
We practiced identifying if a story or text is written to Persuade, Inform,
or Entertain (PIE). Students should be able to explain why an
author wrote a passage and give reasons for their choice.
3. Grammar Skill: Singular
Possessive Nouns
We learned how to use apostrophes to show ownership (e.g., Bear’s garden,
Hare’s idea). Students practiced recognizing and writing singular possessive
nouns in context.
Friday’s
Unit Test Includes:
✅ Comprehension
Questions from the story Tops and Bottoms
✅ Grammar: Singular Possessive Nouns
✅ Author’s Purpose (PIE)
✅ Week 16 vocabulary/definitions and Week 17story words
✅ Application: Students should be able to
recognize, define, and use vocabulary in sentences or identify meaning from
story context.
Reminders
for Success:
- Review vocabulary and definitions nightly.
- Practice the author’s purpose questions using PIE.
- Study grammar notes on singular
possessive nouns.
- Reread “Tops and Bottoms” and practice answering comprehension questions aloud or in writing.
- Unit Test is on Friday – Come prepared!
Let’s finish this school year strong and show what
we’ve learned!
