Week 12 words

I Wanna Iguana Story

In week 12, students will begin a new story from our Reading Street program titled “I Wanna Iguana” by Karen Kaufman Orloff. The story presents a humorous and heartwarming exchange of persuasive letters between a young boy named Alex and his mother, as he tries to convince her to let him have an iguana. Students will explore the elements of persuasive writing and point of view through this creative format.

Reading Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose and structure of persuasive writing.

  • Identify the author’s purpose and point of view.

  • Make text-to-self and text-to-world connections based on the theme of responsibility and pet ownership.

Language and Grammar Focus:

  • Vocabulary Development: Students will be introduced to story-related vocabulary through context and sentence-building activities.

  • Spelling Focus: Emphasis will be placed on identifying and spelling words with the final syllable –le (e.g., little, middle, puzzle).

  • Grammar Conventions:

    • Review of singular and plural nouns, including irregular plural forms.

    • Introduction to spelling rules when changing singular nouns to plural (e.g., changing baby to babies, adding –es to bus to make buses).

Writing Integration:

  • Students will write their own persuasive letters modeled after Alex’s format, practicing clear argumentation, supportive reasoning, and proper letter structure.

  • Group discussions and peer sharing will foster confidence in persuasive communication and idea development.

Assessment and Application:

  • Vocabulary and spelling assessments will take place on Friday, May 2nd with a focus on word recognition, usage in context, and accurate spelling of final syllable –le words.

  • Students will complete a grammar practice worksheet focusing on plural noun rules, followed by a unit test scheduled for Friday, May 9th.

  • Students will present their persuasive letters to the class or in small groups to build oral expression and reasoning skills as part of their unit test.

Week 12's lessons aim to integrate reading, writing, and grammar skills in a meaningful way, encouraging students to engage thoughtfully with both text and written expression. Students are encouraged to apply creativity and logic as they explore persuasive communication and the responsibilities that come with making a request.
